Oct 24. The mighty have fallen

–Light volume Monday.  US equities failed to ride the tail winds of the Japanese market, and finished with modest losses.  In terms of euro$ calendar spreads, EDZ18/EDZ19  was the volume standout at 32k, but the settlement price was unchanged at 22.5 while EDZ7/EDZ8 declined 1.5 to close at 42.    EDZ7 9850 straddle continues to be hammered; sold yesterday down to a price of 6.25 (settled 6.5).   New buyer of 15k TYZ 125.5/126.5/127.5 call fly for 10/64, which is where is settled ref 124-29+.
–Chart below looks like some sort of crypto-currency, up 6x from the low in 2008.  It is SPX divided by the Bloomberg Commodity Index.  In a way, it’s another representation of income inequality: if you own a lot of stock you can buy more stuff (unless it’s GE).  Somewhat interesting that it’s nearly double the 1999 dotcom peak. Of course, if your only stock is GE, things aren’t quite so rosy, as it plunged over 6% to close at 22.32.  At one point, I believe this was the largest stock in terms of market cap.  In doing a quick search, I found a Reuters piece from 2007, just ten short years ago, that noted a market cap of over $400 billion, putting it in second place, trailing Exxon.  Current market cap is half that amount.  Exxon and GE, the biggest companies in the US. Hahahahahaha….old school!  Today, those two combined are worth just a little bit more than Facebook.  I mean, who needs jet engines, power and water supplies and oil, when you’re just a click away from seeing what your network of friend and family is having for dinner? By the way, FB was founded in 2004 and went public 5 years ago.
